Tramadol is a synthetic opioid analgesic medication that is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. It is one of the most powerful opioids available, with effects similar to morphine but with less risk of respiratory depression.
Tramadol was first developed in 1962 as a better alternative to codeine. It was approved for medical use in the United States in 1970 and became available over the counter as a controlled substance in 2011.
